SVSEF gearing up for Intermountain Division North Series races

2/08/2012

The younger ski set gets a chance to strut its stuff at the annual Monroe Cup and Lonnie Basolo races on Bald Mountain, this Saturday and Sunday, February 11-12.

The Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation, with help from Sun Valley Company, stages the slalom and giant slalom races for J4, J5 and J6 girls and boys (as well as J3s with more than 200 points).

The Greyhawk chairlift will open at 8:45 a.m. for competitors. Inspection takes place from 9-9:30 a.m. with first runs commencing at 9:45 a.m. Second runs are scheduled for noon. Awards will be held on the deck at Apple's Bar & Grill at 2:30 p.m.

Since 1988, the Lonnie Basolo has been staged in memory of Basolo, a Hailey alpine ski racer who died in a 1986 ski accident on Baldy at the age of 19. There is a plaque honoring Lonnie at the bottom of Flying Squirrel run. The Monroe Cup slalom is held in honor of Lane Monroe, the former director of the SVSEF.
