International field expected for SVSEF alpine races
1/18/2012
Close to 160 racers (94 men/63 women) will compete this weekend in the Allan Patterson and Laura Flood Memorial races at Sun Valley, and what is exciting for SVSEF Alpine Director Ruben Macaya is that 10 different countries will be represented.
FIS J1 and J2 skiers from the U.S. Virgin Islands, Great Britain, Ireland, Australia, Canada, Italy, New Zealand, Czech Republic, Sweden and United States will challenge themselves in slalom and giant slalom races on Baldy's Hemingway, Greyhawk and Cozy runs.
Macaya explained why the series has attracted such an large and elite field.
"Some of them are college racers looking for points. The lack of snow at other resorts has turned this into a really good points race because of the participation of low-point racers. I am especially excited because instead of spending tens of thousands of dollars traveling around the world trying to lower our points we get to do it in our backyard."
The Allan Patterson Memorial Race is Friday, January 20. Giant slalom racing begins at 9:45 a.m. for women and 10 a.m. for men, with second runs at 1 p.m. and 1:45 p.m. Awards will be held at Apple's Bar & Grill at the end of the race.
The Laura Flood Memorial is January 21-22 with women racing slalom on Saturday and giant slalom Sunday. The men's race schedule is reversed. Racing begins at 10 a.m. both days with second runs at noon (women) and 12:15 p.m. (men). The awards ceremony will take place at Warm Springs Lodge at 3 p.m. Sunday.
