USSA restructures alpine age classifications
June 07, 2012
USSA has implemented new age group categories effective for the 2012-13 winter season. The categories are based on the year of birth with a cut-off date of December 31.
The new divisions are in line with several other sports such as soccer that use the same structure with each age group consisting of athletes two to three years under the stated age.
USSA Age Classifications:
U-21: 1992-1993-1994
U-18: 1995-1996
U-16: 1997-1998
U-14: 1999-2000
U-12: 2001-2002
U-10: 2003-2004
New SVSEF Structure (old/new):
FIS, J1 & J2 Teams/U-21 & U-18
New team/U-16
J3 Team/U-14
C Travel Team/U-12 Travel
C Home Team/U-12 Home with some U-10s
Devo Team/U-10 with some U-12s
The U-14 team will have its own race schedule now. These races will be North and South combined (as the J3 circuit last season). Qualifying races will consist of three slalom, three giant slalom and three super G. The championship series will take place in March here in Sun Valley.
The U-12 Travel Team will participate in the North Series races that C Travel athletes competed in and travel with parents to races. Coaches will be in attendance at races, but will not travel with the athletes. They will train four days per week with sessions taking place on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Skiing will occur on Friday at coaches' discretion.
The U-12 Home Team will train three days per week on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. These athletes may also travel to races but will not get the extra day of training.
Both U-12 teams will take part in SVSEF Mini World Cup races. 9-year-olds that wish to travel will have to qualify through the Mini World Cup format.
