Ruben Macaya – Alpine Program Director

A treasured member of the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation for 24 years, Ruben hails from Bariloche, Argentina. Ruben represented his country in the 1968 Winter Olympics and appeared in five FIS Alpine World Championships from 1966 to 1970. Before coming to Sun Valley, Ruben coached the United States Ski Team from 1980 to 1984 and the 1984 U.S. Winter Olympic Team. He returned to the helm of Argentina for 1988 Winter Olympics. Ruben is a Level 500 coach.


Nate Schwing – Head coach of the men's team, Nate is an eight-year veteran of the SVSEF. Originally from New York, Nate raced and graduated from Lees-McRae College in North Carolina, where he majored in International Studies. A master’s racer in Park City, Nate won the men’s giant slalom at the 2003 Spring Series and was ninth in the same discipline at U.S. Nationals in 2004. Recently, Nate has served as a guest coach for the national team, and was a staff coach for the U.S. Team at the World Junior Championships. He is a Level 300 certified coach.

Erika Hogan –  Erika is in her seventh season with the SVSEF and hails from Holmes, New York. A graduate of Stratton Mountain School, Erika competed on the Europa Cup and NorAm Cup circuits, attending U.S. Nationals several times. She has four FIS victories to her credit with a pair of gold medals from University Races. In the 2002 World University Games, Erika twice skied to third place. She was also named First Team All American while attending the University of Colorado-Boulder where she obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology. She received a Master’s Degree in Sports Psychology from the University of Utah. A Level 300 certified coach, Erika heads up the women's FIS, U21 and U18 teams. 

Pat Savaria – The son of SVSEF co-founder Jim Savaria, Pat cut his teeth as a member of the ski team and is now the proud parent of two accomplished alpine racers, KJ and Austin. Pat is a Level 500 coach and served as men's technical coach on the U.S. Ski Team from 1990-1993. He also coached the U.S. Team at the 1992 Winter Olympics at Albertville, France, and the World Championships at Morioka, Japan, in 1993 and in the World Cup circuit. Once the SVSEF alpine program director, Pat is married to USST alumna Adele Allendar Savaria. Pat raced for the University of Colorado at Boulder. When not on the mountain, Pat enjoys hunting, fishing and water skiing.
